Florida: The Cultural Vacuum of the Universe
There was a joke I told when I was 18 years old: the only place in Florida that has any culture is in the yogurt.
In a lot of ways, Florida sucks. First of all, the election. Bush won twice because of Florida. The first time, it couldn't make up it's mind. Florida does have some cool things though. Like Cape Canaveral.
But Cape Canaveral is not really cultural or artisitic.
Here's the music we got from Florida: Matchbox 20 and Limp Bizkit
Florida's main attraction: Disney World -- which was influenced by Disney Land.
Rap: 2 Live Crew (actually 2 Live Crew is cool, but what happened to them?)
The college scene in Florida is pretty much all jocks and bimbos. I feel sorry for any sensitive artists or nerds in Florida.
I looked up Florida in The Hipster Handbook. I found Lincoln Road in Miami Beach. According to Wikipedia, here's what Lincoln Road is known for:
Lincoln Road is nationally known spot for great outdoor dining, bike riding, and, shopping.
Dining, biking and shopping are not cultural contributions.
The only good cultural contribution Florida has made is This Side of Paradise, a heartbreaking blog of staggering genius.
Andy Hunter can be funny, but never tries too hard. He veers from funny to sad to surreal cuteness.
So before you take my rant on Florida too seriously, check his blog out. Florida might have a chance.
