Yet Another Thing Hollywood Might Ruin
Buster Keaton was a great silent actor. But MGM ruined his career.
Steve Martin was a revolutionary stand-up comic, but now he's remaking The Pink Panther.
From Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to The Marx Brothers, Hollywood corrodes all comic gold to tin (forgive the quasi-Marxist alchemy metaphor).
Now, Dr. Daniel H. Wilson's book How to Survive a Robot Uprising is being optioned by Paramount Studios for a sci-fi comedy.
Why am I so skeptical? The books is a parody of how-to books. I fear the movie will star Tim Allen and the trailer will have cheap, hackneyed slapstick. I could just see him swatting off robot flies in an unconvincing frenzy.
Please Paramount, make sure the adaptation keeps its non-fiction tone. Don't turn it into Hitchiker's Guide to Robots.
